VPN: What It Does, What It Costs, and How to Choose One

A VPN, or virtual private network, is an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server elsewhere: websites see the server's address instead of yours, and the network you are on stops seeing where your traffic goes. This guide covers what a VPN does, what makes one secure, and what it costs.
What a VPN does in practice
When you turn the VPN on, the app builds an encrypted tunnel to one of the provider's servers. Everything your device sends goes into that tunnel: browser tabs, apps, system updates, background sync. Anyone sitting on the same network, whether that is the coffee shop Wi-Fi, a hotel router, or your internet provider, sees only encrypted packets heading to a single destination, the VPN server.
At the far end, the server unwraps the tunnel and forwards your requests to the internet using its own IP address. To the website you visit, the connection appears to come from the city and country where the server sits. That is what lets you appear to be somewhere else, as long as the provider has a server there. SuaVPN's locations are the ones listed on the status page.
Three concrete things follow from this. The local network can no longer read or tamper with what you access. Websites do not see your real IP or your approximate location. And your internet provider no longer holds a list of the domains you visited, because with a properly configured tunnel even DNS lookups travel inside it.
Does a VPN make you anonymous?
No. A VPN hides your IP address and the path your traffic takes, but any service you sign in to still knows who you are. Cookies stored before you connected keep identifying your session, and browser fingerprinting can recognize the same device even after the address changes.
Fingerprinting combines screen size, installed fonts, system language, and dozens of other signals; none of them depends on your IP address, which is why swapping it changes less than the marketing suggests.
It is not a replacement for antivirus software, and it does not stop scams. A phishing link opened inside the tunnel is still phishing. Keep in mind, too, that the VPN provider now sits where your internet provider used to sit: technically, it could see your destinations. That is why a written logging policy matters more than any speed claim on a landing page.
What makes a VPN secure
When you compare VPN services, five things separate a serious provider from an app that only changes your IP. None of them is about marketing; all of them can be checked before you pay:
- Protocol: WireGuard is the current standard. Its codebase is small enough to audit, it uses modern cryptography, and it ships inside the Linux kernel. OpenVPN and IKEv2 still work, but they are heavier and slower to establish.
- Logging policy: the provider should state in writing what it keeps and what it does not. Be skeptical of anyone claiming zero logs without explaining how they bill you, authenticate you, and enforce device limits.
- Jurisdiction and accountability: where the company is based, who is responsible for it, and how it handles requests from authorities.
- Per-device keys: each device gets its own key pair, revocable on its own, rather than one shared password for everything.
- Clear pricing and cancellation: the price is visible before you sign up, there is no lock-in, you can cancel in a click, and refunds follow the law.
Fast VPN: what actually affects speed
Every VPN adds some overhead, but encryption is rarely the bottleneck. Distance is. A server in your own region answers much faster than one across an ocean, simply because the packets travel less. After distance come server load (how many people are connected at the same time) and the quality of the provider's own upstream connection.

How much does a VPN cost?
It depends on the length of the commitment more than on the brand. Monthly plans suit a single trip; yearly plans lower the effective monthly price for daily use; free services usually charge you in data caps, ads, or logs instead. SuaVPN's current prices are on the pricing page.

SuaVPN's prices are loaded from our catalog, so the amount shown on the pricing page is the amount you are charged. The three plans differ only in how many devices you can add: Basic covers 3, Pro covers 5, and Family covers 10. Protocol, locations, and speed are identical across all of them.
Payment is by credit or debit card, processed by Stripe. The plan is activated as soon as your issuer approves the charge, the subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, and prices are shown in Brazilian reais, so an issuer outside Brazil handles the conversion. You can cancel at any time, which stops future charges and keeps your access until the end of the paid period. Under Brazilian consumer law, you also have 7 days from purchase to change your mind and receive a full refund.
How SuaVPN works
There is no SuaVPN app to install and no browser extension. You create an account, choose a plan, and add devices in the dashboard. For each device, the dashboard generates a WireGuard configuration that you import into the official WireGuard app, which is free and open source: scan the QR code on a phone, or load the .conf file on a computer. Switching locations means generating another configuration for the same device.

Frequently asked questions
Is a paid VPN worth it?
If you use public Wi-Fi, travel, or simply prefer that your internet provider not keep a list of the sites you visit, yes. What a paid VPN costs is small next to what a free VPN usually charges you in data, ads, and privacy.
Should I pay monthly or yearly?
Monthly for occasional use, such as a single trip. Yearly for daily use: the monthly equivalent drops and you do not have to renew every month. The billing options currently offered are shown on the pricing page.
Can I use SuaVPN from outside Brazil?

No. SuaVPN uses the official WireGuard app on every platform, with a configuration generated per device. There is no browser extension: the tunnel protects the whole device, not just one browser.
