Why the Prime Video catalog changes from country to country

Movies and series are licensed by territory. A studio sells the US rights to a title to one platform and may sell the Spanish rights to another. A platform that bought the rights for a single country has to restrict playback to that country, or it is in breach of contract. Original productions, such as Amazon's own series, tend to be available in more places because the platform owns the rights outright.

To decide what to show, the service has to estimate where you are. The most common clue is your IP address: geolocation databases map it to a country and city. It is not the only one. On Prime Video, your account belongs to a specific Amazon store, and that link defines your "home" catalog; on phones, the operating system can report your location; the country of your payment method counts too. Does a VPN work with Prime Video?

Partly. With the tunnel active, the connection appears to come from the server's country and city, DNS lookups included. What does not change is the store your account belongs to, the payment method behind it, or the device's own region, and when those signals disagree the platform can refuse a title.

Is it legal to use a VPN for streaming?

Using a VPN is legal in the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil and most other countries. Getting around a geographic restriction is a contractual matter between you and the platform, not a criminal one: the consequence their terms describe is blocked playback, not a legal offense.

Prime Video's terms of use state that title availability depends on your geographic location and that Amazon may use technologies to verify where you are. Netflix and Disney+ carry similar clauses: the service is licensed for the country of your account, and the catalog you see is the one for where you are. None of them forbid having a VPN installed, but all reserve the right to restrict playback when the location does not match.

How to use a VPN with Prime Video, step by step

For streaming, the order matters, because the platform's app records the location it detects on launch and keeps it until you close it:

• Install the official WireGuard app on the device you will watch on (phone, tablet, or computer).
• In the SuaVPN dashboard, create a device, choose a location, and add the configuration to WireGuard by scanning the QR code or importing the .conf file.
• Close the Prime Video app completely before activating the tunnel.
• Activate the tunnel, confirm the handshake in the WireGuard app, and open a site that shows your IP address to check the country.
• Open Prime Video again. If a title refuses to play, the platform noticed the location mismatch; switching to another location may or may not change that.
• On TVs and living-room devices that cannot run the WireGuard app, watch on your phone or laptop, or mirror the screen.

Abroad: your home subscription in another country

The most common case is a subscriber on a trip who wants to keep watching what they already pay for. Video quality and which location to choose

High-resolution video needs a stable connection more than a fast one. With the VPN active, every packet passes through the server before reaching the platform; the farther the server, the higher the latency and the more likely the player is to drop the quality. For privacy while watching from home, pick the location nearest to you, ideally in your own country if listed: the path is short and the platform sees an address it expects.
