P2P VPN: hide your IP while sharing files

P2P, or peer-to-peer, is any transfer in which your device connects directly to other people's devices, which means every peer in the swarm can see your IP address. A VPN replaces it with the server's. Here is why torrenting exposes you, what the tunnel changes, and which leaks it does not close.

What P2P traffic is

P2P (peer-to-peer) is any exchange of data in which participants connect to each other instead of to a central server. Each person receives pieces of a file from those who already have them and sends pieces to those who do not. BitTorrent is the best-known example, but not the only one.

Plenty of everyday P2P goes unnoticed: Windows can distribute its updates peer to peer, Linux distributions publish install images as torrents, and sync tools, blockchain nodes, and WebRTC video calls connect participants directly. In each case your device has to announce where it can be reached, and that address is your public IP.

Why does torrenting expose your IP address?

Because BitTorrent needs your address to work. Your client announces it to the tracker and to the distributed hash table, then connects directly to every peer it can reach, so everyone sharing that file sees your address, your client, and how much you have. Anyone can join a swarm just to record that list.

When you open a website over HTTPS, only that site's server sees your IP. In a torrent, your client announces your IP to the tracker and to the distributed hash table (DHT), then connects to every peer in the swarm it can reach. The problem is who else can join. Anyone can enter a swarm just to record the connected IPs, with a timestamp and the file name. Companies do this for rights holders, and the resulting list becomes a notice to your internet provider, or in some countries a settlement demand. A public IP reveals your provider and approximate city; matched against the provider's customer records, it identifies the account holder.

Your provider also sees a pattern even without seeing content: many simultaneous connections to residential addresses, on unusual ports, with about as much going out as coming in. On shared-IP connections (CGNAT), common on mobile carriers, inbound connections never reach you, which shrinks the pool of peers you can talk to.

What a VPN changes for P2P

With the tunnel active, your P2P client announces the VPN server's IP to the tracker and to the peers, not yours. Whoever is logging the swarm writes down the server's address, shared by everyone connected to it at that moment. To your internet provider, what leaves your home is one encrypted UDP stream to one destination: peers, ports, file names, and DNS lookups stay inside the tunnel.

WireGuard suits this use well. It runs over UDP, which avoids wrapping TCP inside TCP, and keeps a session stable across long connections, such as seeding a file for hours. The client does not need to know about the VPN: all of the device's traffic enters the tunnel, so nothing needs configuring in the client beyond the interface binding below.

What remains between you and the internet is the VPN provider, so its logging policy matters more here than anywhere else. SuaVPN does not record the sites you visit, destination IPs, DNS queries, or the content of your traffic. Leaks a VPN does not close on its own

Turning on the tunnel is not enough if the client still has another path to the internet. Four things to check, then a final test:

  • Tunnel drop: if the VPN disconnects and the client keeps running, the next announcement to the tracker goes out with your real IP. On Windows, edit the tunnel in the WireGuard app and check "Block untunneled traffic (kill-switch)". On Android, enable "Block connections without VPN" in the system VPN settings. On iPhone and Mac there is no kill switch checkbox; on-demand activation reconnects on its own, which narrows the window but does not close it, so the interface binding below matters more there.   • IPv6: if your connection has IPv6 and the client finds a route through it outside the tunnel, your real address shows up in the swarm. With the VPN on, open an IP-check site and see whether the IPv6 address shown is still yours; if it is, disable IPv6 on the network interface while you use P2P.
  • Network interface: most torrent clients can be bound to a specific network interface. Pick the WireGuard interface. With the tunnel down, the client then simply cannot connect, which is exactly what you want.
  • WebRTC in the browser: browser-based P2P clients and video calls can reveal your local IP through WebRTC. That is browser behavior, not a VPN failure; run a WebRTC leak test and adjust the browser settings if it shows your address.
  • Final test: with the tunnel on, a site that shows your IP should display the location you chose. With the tunnel off and the client bound to the interface, the client should sit there with no connection at all.

Free P2P VPN: why to be skeptical, and how SuaVPN handles it

"Free P2P VPN" is a common search and usually a disappointment. P2P moves a lot of data and keeps connections open for hours, the opposite of what a free service wants to carry. Is it legal to use a VPN for P2P?

In most countries, yes. VPNs and P2P are legal; distributing copyrighted works without permission is not, with or without a VPN, and our terms of service prohibit that use.

With the VPN on, do other peers see my IP?

No. They see the VPN server's address, shared by everyone connected to it. Your home IP only appears if the tunnel drops while the client keeps running, which is why the kill switch and interface binding matter.
