Your IP address is the number every site, app, and network you join sees, and it points to your internet provider and your approximate city. Hiding it means routing your traffic through a VPN server, so that address is replaced by the server's. Here is what an IP reveals, what a VPN changes, and what it does not.
What does your IP address reveal?
Your internet provider or mobile carrier, your country, and an approximate region and city. It does not reveal your name, your street address, or your phone number: only your provider can link an address to a subscriber, and only through the legal process that applies where you live.
An IP address identifies your connection on the internet, and it is not handed out at random. Regional registries allocate blocks of addresses to internet providers and mobile carriers, and those allocations are public records. That is why any site can tell, without effort, which provider a visitor uses and where that block is normally used.
Geolocation databases refine that into a country, a region, and an approximate city, which is what "what is my IP" lookup tools display. On a home or office connection the city is often right. On mobile data it can be far off: carriers route traffic through a handful of gateways, so your phone may appear to be in another city or state altogether. What an IP does not reveal is your name, street address, or phone number. Only your provider can link the address to a subscriber, and it does so only under the legal process that applies where you live.
Even so, an IP is a reasonably stable identifier. Ad networks use it to tie visits together, services apply country rules based on it, and the administrator of any network you join, at work, in a hotel, or on campus, can see which addresses your device talks to and when.
How a VPN masks your IP
A VPN opens an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the provider. Everything you access travels through that server, and it is the server's IP address, not yours, that shows up on the other end. Connect to a server in the United States and sites see a US address; connect to one in another country and they see that country's address. Only the VPN server sees your real IP on the far side; it needs it to route replies back to you.
This is different from a proxy or an "IP changer" set up inside a browser. Those tools swap the address for one program only, often without encryption, and leave the rest of the device exposed. A VPN works at the system level: browser, apps, and background updates all leave through the tunnel with the server's IP. Rebooting your router to "change your IP address" is not the same thing: the fresh address comes from the same block, so sites still see the same provider and city, and the network still sees every destination. Hiding your IP with a free VPN: what to check
"Hide my IP with a free VPN" is a common search, and it deserves a straight answer. A free VPN changes your IP like any other, but somebody is paying for the server. When it is not a subscription, it is usually you, through ads, data limits, or logs of what you access. Hiding your IP from sites means handing all of your traffic to the VPN provider; picking one whose business is selling that traffic defeats the purpose.

Does hiding your IP make you anonymous?
No. Swapping your IP address changes the path your traffic takes, not your identity. Sign in to email, a social network, or your bank and that service knows it is you. Cookies saved before you connected keep identifying the same session, and browser fingerprinting recognizes the device itself.
Fingerprinting combines screen size, installed fonts, OS version, language, and dozens of other signals, none of which depend on the address your traffic arrives from.
There are also leaks worth checking. If DNS does not go through the tunnel, the network still sees site names; if the browser uses WebRTC for video calls, it can expose local addresses. How to hide your IP on a phone

- Open a site that shows your IP: it should display the server's city and provider, not yours.

How to hide your IP on a computer
On Windows, Mac, and Linux you use the .conf file rather than the QR code. Each device gets its own key pair, revocable from the panel; the device limit depends on your plan. The steps:
- Create a device for the computer in the panel and save the .conf file.
- Install WireGuard: from the official site on Windows, from the Mac App Store on Mac, or through the wireguard-tools package on Linux.
- In the app, choose "Import tunnel(s) from file" and select the .conf. On Linux, copy the file to /etc/wireguard/ and bring it up with wg-quick.
- Turn the tunnel on and confirm the handshake. On Windows, check "Block untunneled traffic (kill-switch)" so nothing leaves with your real IP if the VPN drops.
- Confirm the new IP on a lookup site: the city and provider should be the server's. If the handshake never appears, check the location on the status page first, then ask at support.
